Day 2 - 26 March
Session:
Airport Design, Planning & Development - Middle East & Asia
17:00 - 17:25
- Urumqi, China terminal competition: the Silk Road as context
Synopsis: 'Going to the Outside World' conceptually motivated the contextual process of creating an exceptional terminal design for this Xinjiang province transport hub that connects China and Central Asia to the western world. The Urumqi North Terminal 1 design used an analysis of landscape forms, culture and the historical Silk Road trade route between the African and Eurasian continents to inspire a unique design solution. Integrating careful airside and landside planning, incremental development strategies, structural logic, passenger walking distance parameters and clear passenger flow, the result is efficient, cost effective and striking in form and spatial experience.
Audience will learn:
- How regional context informs modern terminal design to create an exceptional solution
- The research process to understand unique characteristics of locale
- Design options analysis, form analysis and the final design solution resulting from a creatively contextual approach
- Incremental development and phasing supporting programme goals and air traffic demand changes
- Passenger experience, regional relevance, passenger flow within a dynamic interior
