Rian Burger, Principal, Airport Sector Leader Canada East, Stantec Architecture Ltd, Canada

Speaker Biograghy: Rian is an architect with over 20 years of experience, specialising in airport terminal design since 2005. He has an intimate understanding of airport operations, the hard and soft constraints that affect the design of airport terminals, and the building systems that support them. As Principal Airport Architect for Stantec in Toronto, Rian is currently leading the design of Toronto Pearson Airport’s Terminal 3 Enhancement Programme, while also leading Stantec's Airport Sector in Eastern Canada. His portfolio includes the new Santiago Airport International Terminal, as well as multiple renovation and expansion projects at Vancouver, Edmonton and Toronto Airports. Rian has had to face the challenge of solving Canada's particularly complex passenger connection flows for four of its largest airports, and is therefore particularly qualified to speak on this subject. He is a well-regarded speaker at conferences across North America and in Europe, including PTE, ACI-NA, AAAE and IAAE.

Day 1 - 10 March
Session:
Passenger Processing: Bag Drop, Check-in & Self-Service

16:05 - 16:30 - Inter-sector connections – the name of the new game
Synopsis: As airports compete with one another for hub traffic, the speed and ease of the connection facilities they offer passengers are becoming an increasingly important differentiating factor. Canada's airports are some of the most complicated in the world in this regard, as they accommodate three sectors, and hence nine different inter-sector connection flows. The presentation will draw on the speaker's experience at four of Canada's largest international passenger terminals, and expound on the types of solutions most suited to existing terminals, as well as the factors to be taken into account when designing them, including the trend towards self-service.
