Henrik Rothe, Senior Lecturer, Cranfield University, UK

Speaker Biograghy: Henrik is an accomplished architect with considerable expertise in airport planning, terminal design and urbanism. His extensive knowledge of working in 35 countries includes assignments as designer and strategic adviser. Henrik is the founding director of Leit-Werk, a unique platform supporting airports and larger consortia inspiring the design process in collaboration with other world-leading consultancies. He has been lead architect and urban designer in key projects including Khartoum New Internationl Airport, Malpensa and Bangalore and was awarded the RIBA President's Medal. Henrik engages in pioneering work that expands the possibilities of design innovation, pushing the functional and spatial integration of airports with their urban environment. Henrik’s professional work is inextricably related to research and teaching, including London Metropolitan University, SIM University Singapore, Leeds Becket and the University of Brighton. Henrik became Senior Lecturer at Cranfield University in 2014, where he leads the urban turbine research project.

13:45 - 14:15 - Deconstructing the passenger terminal
Synopsis: Cranfield University will present its research support for airports in their further transition from enclosed, isolated landing strips to inviting, 24/7 urban high streets. Inspired by ‘thinking as the customer first’, the presentation provocatively dissolves the classic terminal by breaking down boundaries between the airport and the city in response to future passenger expectations: plug and go, pods to live in, etc. Committed to cultural and societal change, airports should focus on service culture and process-based facilities to offer a different experience.
