Speaker Biograghy: Gerhard is a civil engineer specialised in geotechnics, with 30 years' experience in multidisciplinary large infrastructure projects like high-speed railway lines and airports in Germany, France, The Netherlands, China and Turkey. Currently he is responsible for the business of Arcadis in Turkey. In this position he is involved in infrastructure projects such as high-speed railway lines, metro lines, ports and also Istanbul New Airport. At Istanbul New Airport, Gerhard is the leading engineer for the design of the earthwork platform.

Synopsis: Istanbul New Airport is located in the north of the city, next to the Black Sea.The hilly topography of the area requires significant earthworks to realise a stable platform for the runways, taxiways and aprons. The area of the New Airport was previously used for open pit mining. The presentation shows how a brownfield can be transformed into new utilisation as one of the biggest airports in the world. The main geotechnical challenges and earthwork solutions will be presented.
