Envisa

Speaker Biograghy: Dr Stavros Stromatas is an air-quality research scientist with a special interest in aviation’s environmental footprint. He is currently working at Envisa, a Paris-based environmental consulting company specialising in sustainable aviation. Stavros is the principal developer of Eurocontrol’s Open-ALAQS, a software that provides a four-dimensional emission inventory for an airport, in which the emissions (including CO2) from the various stationary and mobile sources are aggregated and subsequently displayed for analysis. He has also participated in numerous international research projects coordinated by the EASA, Eurocontrol and the European Commission. Furthermore, he is currently an official member (nominated from Eurocontrol) of the ICAO CAEP Modelling and Databases Group (MDG) for emissions modelling.

Day 1 - 14 March
Session:
Energy, Environment & Sustainability

14:00 - 14:30 - Open-ALAQS: the first complete open-source airport local air-quality tool suite
Synopsis: Airports monitor air quality (it’s legally required in some countries). But measurements can be hard to interpret. How can we be sure that the pollution identified is really due to airports? This presentation will explain how Open-ALAQS, a Eurocontrol open-source tool, will help airports quantify their emissions and assess their impact on air quality (dispersion and concentrations). We will show how, thanks to an open-source geographical information system, the process of defining emission sources is simplified, and how the results can be easily visualised in various ways. This new system is validated by CAEP and is compatible with the EU air quality standards.
