Jacobs

Speaker Biograghy: Chris is a sustainability professional who has worked in academia, local government and consultancy. Since joining Jacobs nearly 10 years ago, he has developed a transport infrastructure focus of sustainability assessment, carbon footprinting and sustainable energy strategy/projects for a number of clients. He is especially familiar with the challenges of airports and aviation, having worked on numerous projects to address environmental impacts with Gatwick, Heathrow, Manchester, Stansted and other airports in the UK, mainland Europe and elsewhere. Among other tasks, he has undertaken energy strategy reviews and low-carbon energy solutions design, and worked as Heathrow Airport’s Interim Energy Strategy Manager between 2010 and 2012. Personal fact: More traditional transport infrastructure figures largely in his life too: Chris has nearly always lived close to various UK waterways and he continues to enjoy exploring his local canal towpath on his bike or with the family dog.

Day 2 - 15 March
Session:
Energy, Environment & Sustainability

15:30 - 16:05 - Heathrow Energy Centre – biomass trigeneration in an airport context
Synopsis: We consider the design, development and operational challenges of the recently commissioned Heathrow Energy Centre. As part of the construction of Terminal 2, an approach was needed that aligned with a corporate commitment to carbon reductions while meeting environmental conditions from the local authority and environmental regulator. Identifying technically feasible and commercially viable options for low-carbon heat and power was fundamental, although delivering an innovative solution in a constrained location was never easy. The commissioned solution involves a woodchip biomass-fuelled boiler supplying an Organic Rankine Cycle combined heat and powerplant supported by an absorption chiller.
