DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY Big and complicated Page offers an inside look at George Bush Intercontinental Airport’s new United terminal The United Airlines IAH Terminal B Transformation program will be the subject of a comprehensive panel discussion at Passenger Terminal Expo 2024 (Frankfurt, Germany, April 16, 17 & 18). The panel will feature United Airlines and representatives of the integrated execution team for the project, who will discuss program development from the perspectives of clients, planners and designers. Page, in collaboration with Grimshaw, is designing the terminal component of the carrier’s largest capital improvement program to date. As a major part of this extensive transformation, the terminal increases capacity and modernizes United’s hub at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). departures and arrivals experiences. First, in the departures sequence, a 23,225m 2 , grade-level addition contains a new ticketing hall, an elevated security screening platform (SSCP) and new baggage handling systems. The second major building component, serving departing and arriving travelers, is the redesigned 25,500m 2 original terminal building. Constructed using an inflexible concrete structural system, it surrenders its former landside ticketing functions to become a post-security central square with concessions, digital media experience and access to the concourses. Between the two components, a mezzanine-level security checkpoint dramatically stitches the old and new together, acting as a threshold between landside and airside. A reconfigured baggage claim hall also occupies the grade level of the existing structure. Modernized infrastructure Complicated, integrated and bold, the IAH Terminal B project marries new construction with the adaptive reuse of the existing 1969 terminal structure, presenting multiple complex design and construction challenges. Terminal B has two distinct parts, woven into a coherent whole that modernizes the Passenger-focused design To simplify the existing web of entries and exits from terminal curbsides, all new terminal access roadways and curbsides will be at grade level.
