Weather models T Dr Akemi Narindal-Aoki, senior content marketing manager, Meteomatics he weather intelligence and technology firm trusted by more than 600 companies, including Tesla, Swiss Re Group, CVS Health, Airbus and EDF Energy, is bringing its Europe-tested 1km weather data model to the USA. Known as US1k, the Meteomatics technology covers the contiguous USA and the Gulf of Mexico at a resolution of 1km 2 , rivaling the country’s current leading weather model – NOAA’s High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR), which covers a broader, less detailed 9km 2 scope. The US1k’s fine resolution powers highly accurate forecasts of even extremely localized meteorological events, like storms, hail and thunderstorms, anywhere in the country. capturing localized conditions, as they primarily predict conditions in the higher-level atmosphere. With its weather model, Meteomatics now offers US businesses a resolution fine enough to accurately detect local weather events created in low-level airspace, such as fog, precipitation, wind, hail, storms and fluctuating temperatures. Industry applications The US1k model redefines short-term weather forecasting for the contiguous USA and Gulf of Mexico with a horizontal grid resolution of 1km (~0.62 miles) US1k offers real-time insights into localized weather patterns directly affecting US companies across key industries, including energy, insurance, aviation and agriculture. This provides decision-makers with highly accurate forecasts that they can use to make critical Extreme events Intensifying hurricanes, floods, extreme heat and widespread wildfires significantly affect businesses. In fact, extreme weather is expected to be one of the most significant business risks over the next two years. But extreme weather is only one concern. Everyday shifts in weather conditions and long-term climate trends can also significantly affect business offerings and operations. This makes it imperative that companies have real-time insights into hyper-local weather events. However, despite technological advances, current government and commercial weather observation technologies lack the granularity and frequency to plan operational processes and extreme weather responses effectively. Meteomatics’ US1k is the only weather model that covers the contiguous USA and the Gulf of Mexico at a native 1km spatial resolution and a native 15-minute temporal resolution, with hourly updates. This resolution far exceeds the standard for global weather models, which typically have a 20km spatial resolution, coarser temporal resolution and less frequent updates (three or four times daily), making them less precise in 54 • www.meteorologicaltechnologyinternational.com • April 2025 ACCURACY After EURO1k’s success in Europe, Meteomatics is introducing its US1k weather model to the US market, offering nine times higher resolution than the nation’s current leading solution redefined
